Over this past weekend, employees, family members, friends and suppliers of RammSanderson walked or ran over one million steps and raised over £3,500 for The Down’s Syndrome Association.
The initiative was arranged for Sunday 21 March to celebrate World Down’s Syndrome Awareness Day.
As part of the day, the team encouraged over 200 connections to wear mis-matched socks, raising awareness. The socks represent chromosomes, to highlight the fact that Down’s syndrome is caused by the presence of a third copy of chromosome 21 in cells.
As the company’s charity of the year for 2021, the day has kickstarted a year long programme of activities in support of the DSA.
One of the DSA’s campaigns is called ‘Tell it right’. This initiative aims to change the language used when talking about Down’s Syndrome, especially when talking to new/expectant parents who may be expecting a child with a chance of having Down’s Syndrome. Around 1 in 1,000 babies born in the UK will have Down’s Syndrome.
Over 20 staff and their families took part covering nearly 500 miles as part of the challenge to take at least 21,000 steps on the day. RammSanderson Director, Anthony Mellor, whose son Harry has Down’s Syndrome ran an epic 27km whilst co-directors, Nick Sanderson and Oliver Ramm covered 15km and 18km respectively.
Anthony Mellor said: “The team put in an absolutely stunning effort and we had a good day doing it so it’s a pretty fantastic result. We are well on our way to reaching our £5k target and we still have 10 months of fund raising still ahead of us. My legs were a little achy on Monday, but it was a really tremendous success, and I would like to thank everyone who took part for their support.”
Anthony has set up a Gofundme page and will be encouraging people to make online donations and visit the DSA shop to make purchases.
